  4. Country Description:  Namibia is a southern African country with a
  5. moderately developed economy.  Facilities for tourism are available.
  6.  
  7. Entry Requirements:  A passport, an onward/return ticket and proof of
  8. sufficient funds are required for entrance into Namibia.  A visa is not
  9. required for tourist or business visits; however, visitors must be processed
  10. through immigration at a legal port of entry within 24 hours if the actual
  11. point of entry is not staffed by an immigration official.  The following
  12. airports are considered legal ports of entry for the purpose of complying
  13. with this requirement:  Windhoek International, Eros Suburban, Keetmanshoop,
  14. Oranjemund, Ross Pinah, Ondangwa, Oshakati, Grootfontein, Mpacha, Rundu, and
  15. Rooikop.  Travelers can obtain further information from the Embassy of
  16. Namibia at 1605 New Hampshire Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20009,

  21. Medical Facilities:  Medical facilities are relatively modern, especially in
  22. the city of Windhoek.  Doctors and hospitals often expect immediate cash
  23. payment for health care services.  U.S. medical insurance is not always
  24. valid outside the United States.  Supplemental medical insurance with
  25. specific overseas coverage has proved to be useful. Information on health
  26. matters can be obtained from the Centers for Disease Control's international
  27. travelers hotline, telephone (404) 332-4559.

  29. Information on Crime:  Some petty crime occurs.  The loss or theft abroad of
  30. a U.S. passport should be reported immediately to local police and to the
  31. nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.  The pamphlets, "A Safe Trip Abroad" and
  32. "Tips for Travelers to Sub-Saharan Africa," provide useful information on
  33. protecting personal security while traveling abroad and on travel in the
  34. region in general.  Both are available from the Superintendent of Documents,
  35. U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402.

  37. Drug Penalties:  U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in
  38. which they are traveling.  Penalties for possession, use or trafficking in
  39. illegal drugs are strictly enforced.  Convicted offenders can expect jail
  40. sentences and fines.

  42. Registration:  U.S. citizens who register at the U.S. Embassy in Windhoek
  43. can obtain updated information on travel and security in Namibia.

  53. update the entry requirement that travelers who enter without immigration
  54. inspection must report to immigration within 24 hours of arrival.
